Wayfinding

the face of time melts over us
fold upon fold in milky dusk

fallen fast asleep somewhere
strange and warm and still and fair

then I feel you've reappeared
as each night, you find me here

wrapped around me, close, secure
a body could not be more sure

your hands lie open, gentle and calm
a steadfast haven, a healing balm

two rings of silver catch the light
of one north star still burning bright

your gun, your crown, your mask, your shroud
crushed to pebbles on the ground

upon these little stones we rest
your body curved against my chest

somehow I know when day arrives
the gift dissolves, the dream unwinds

gone beneath the morning sun
gone before the day’s begun

weightless here, our souls refreshed
your breathing warm against my flesh

wordless, I know you feign your sleep
your secrets I will always keep

my heart finds yours beneath my skin
yours answers mine in kind again

we agreed to ring the bell
lest we descend to a different hell

did we make it out alive?
we have each other to survive

I wake up naked, all is gone
and still you remain before the dawn

what bending of the night is this?
what mystery in the deep abyss

that empties out my open hands
then lays you here with no demands?

and when I'm torn from this embrace
we sojourn on to the same place
