Pergoda
pergoda (noun): A freestanding backyard architectural feature found almost exclusively in the vocabulary of mothers who have never owned one.
What a gorgeous night. It seems almost criminal to spend it looking at a screen. Absolutely perfect weather to enjoy the outdoors, play soccer, or take a stroll around the block.
After returning from our jaunt, we split a bottle of red wine on the front porch.
She peppers me with questions. Some more ridiculous than others.
“Why don’t you build a pergoda?”
“How can you stand arguletta?! It’s not even a lettuce!”
“So, are you gonna get yourself fixed, or what?”
“Why don’t you get your hair trimmed?”
When I explained I had a haircut next week, she clarified.
“No, I mean on top. It’ll give you more volume.”

I just have to keep nodding.
She makes me want to be a better person.
