Goodnight

I wish I knew your goodnight words,
I think of them from time to time.
I told God I’d keep an advent,
not three hundred sixty-five.

Before whatever’s coming next,
I have a few things on my mind.
In another life there are those
thoughts I’d rather not abide.

I would not stay away for long,
just had a few more things to square.
Let the dawn stretch into day,
and I will surely meet you there.

How do I let each sun go down
before I risk the chance to say:
“Goodnight, my love, it’s time to rest,
my restless love from far away.

Sweet dreams to hold you a moment more,
to greet each morning with a kiss,
when your eyes open at first light,
I’ll close mine with your name on my lips.
